Ebook: The Ruling on Muslims Attending Mixed Universities – Translated and Compiled by Mustafa George DeBerry

The Ruling on Muslims Attending Mixed Universities Translated and Compiled by Mustafa George DeBerry
A little more than two years ago, a fatwa was attributed to the Noble Shaykh Saalih ibn Muhammad al-Luhaydaan (May Allaah preserve him) wherein he permitted Muslims to attend mixed gender universities, and that he said that it is allowed for men and women to mix in this sort of environment, as a matter of necessity.  Clarification was sought from the Shaykh, only to realize that he made his ruling in a very limited circumstance for a particular situation. However, this fatwa was then falsely applied in an absolute way, to any general situation, causing much confusion in the west amongst Muslim communities. Our noble brother Abu Ismael Mustafa George (May Allaah preserve him) has compiled this excellent treatise translating many of the fatawaa of the scholars from the past to the present on this issue. Mustafa George states in his introduction,
“The purpose of this compilation is to remind myself and the English speaking Muslim community of the tremendous dangers that free mixing has upon the believing men and women as well as the community as a whole. A clear explanation and justification of why Islaam has forbidden such free mixing is present in the abundant proofs from the Qur’aan, the authentic Sunnah and the statements of the Salaf.”
After careful examination of this ebook, the reader will be left with a vividly clear understanding of this issue, inshaaAllaah ta’alaa.

An excerpt taken from the chapter: “The Proofs For The Impermissibility of Mixing From The Glorious Qur’aan”:
 {Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts etc.). That is purer for them. Verily Allaah is All-Aware of what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts etc.)…}
Shaykh Muhammad Ameen ash-Shinqeetee (rahimahullaah) commented:
“From the Qur’aanic proofs which support the impermissibility of mixing between men and women is the fact that Allaah has ordered the two sexes to lower their gaze from one another….thus if one were to ponder over these religious, upright mannerisms that are mentioned in these verses, he would become aware that the callers to indecency and mixing between men and women have opposed these verses with a devilish philosophy and they conceal behind this the intent of losing dignity and chastity.”
Shaykh ‘Abdul ‘Azeez Ibn Baaz (rahimahullaah) commented on the above verse saying:
“In this verse Allaah orders His Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) to inform the believing men and women that it is mandatory for them to lower their gaze and protect their private parts from fornication and adultery. From that which is known is that protecting one’s private parts from evil can only be accomplished when one also abandons all avenues of falling into such evil. Mixing between men and women is one of the greatest means of this evil occurring.”
He (Shaykh ‘Abdul ‘Azeez Ibn Baaz) also stated:
“From that which is known is that protecting the private parts from evil acts can only be accomplished when an individual abstains from all actions that lead to evil and certainly, looking at that which is not permissible and mixing between men and women in workplaces and other than this is one of the greatest means of falling into evil actions. Consequently, how is it possible that one can lower his gaze and protect his privates and a female cover her beauty if she has joined the men and mixed with them ?!”

Kissing on the Cheeks

Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:

A man said: "O Messenger of Allaah, when one of us meets his brother or his friend, should he bow to him?" He said: "No." He said: "Should he embrace him and kiss him?" He said: "No." He said: "Should he take his hand and shake hands with him?" He said: Yes.
[This hadeeth was classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan al-Tirmidhi]

Also, Shaykh al-Albani addressed this issue, after mentioning the hadeeth above:

"In fact the hadeeth clearly states that kissing when meeting is not prescribed in Islam. That does not include kissing one's children or wife, as is obvious.

With regard to the ahaadeeth which state that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) kissed some of his companions on various occasions “such as when he kissed and embraced Zayd ibn Haarithah when he came to Madeenah, and when he embraced Abuâl-Haytham ibn al-Tayhaan, etc “ the following points may be noted in response to that:

1.“ These are unsound ahaadeeth which cannot be taken as evidence.

2.“ Even if any of them were saheeh, it is not permissible to use them against this saheeh hadeeth, because it is an action on the part of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) which may be interpreted as applying to a specific case or there may be some specific reason for that which makes this hadeeth unfit to be used as evidence, unlike this hadeeth(one narrated by Anas, radiya Allahu anhu) which is a verbal hadeeth that is addressed in general terms to the ummah as a whole, so it is strong evidence which cannot be rejected

3. It is established in the field of usool that words take precedence over deeds in the event of a conflict, and the hadeeth which indicates a prohibition takes precedence over another which indicates permissibility.

4. This hadeeth is verbal and indicates a prohibition, so it takes precedence over the other ahaadeeth mentioned even if they are saheeh.

Similarly, with regard to hugging and embracing, we say that it is not prescribed because the hadeeth forbids it, but Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: When the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) met, they would shake hands, and if they had come from a journey they would embrace Narrated by al-Tabaraani in al-Awsat, and its men are the men of saheeh, as stated by al-Mundhiri (3/270), and al-Bayhaqi, 8/36
Al-Bayhaqi (7/100) narrated with a saheeh isnaad from al-Sha’bi that when the companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) met, they would shake hands, and when they came from a journey they would embrace one another.
Al-Bukhaari narrated in al-Adab al-Mufrad (970), and Ahmad narrated (3/495) that Jaabir ibn 'Abd-Allaah said: I heard  that a man knew a hadeeth and had heard it from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). I bought a camel, loaded my luggage onto it, and traveled for a month until I came to Syria, where I found 'Abd-Allaah ibn Unays. I said to the doorkeeper: Tell him: Jaabir is at the door. He said: Ibn 'Abd-Allaah? I said: Yes. He came out tripping on his garment and he embraced me and I embraced him¦ Its isnaad is hasan as stated by al-Haafiz, 1/195. al-Bukhaari narrated it among the muâ'aalaq reports.
So it may be said that embracing in the case of a journey is exempted from the prohibition, because the Sahaabah did that."
[Silsilat al-Ahaadeeth al-Saheehah (1/74, hadeeth no. 160)]

The Advice of Asmaa bint Abu Bakr (radiallaahu anha) to her son Abdullah Ibn Zubair (radhi Allaahu anhu)

(Inspirational) The Advice of Asmaa bint Abu Bakr (radiallaahu anha) to her son Abdullah Ibn Zubair (radhi Allaahu anhu)

From the tape “The life of Abdullah Ibn Zubair-By Shaikh Muhammed Anjaree”.
Below are the words of advise Asmaa bint Abu Bakr radiallaahu anha gave to her son at the age of over 100 years and he himself was over 60 years of age defending this deen and Allah (subhanna wa ta ala) had granted them the preservation of their faculties and vigour! May Allah Have Mercy upon them.Ameen.
**************************
The last stage of Abdullah Ibn Zubair life, and that was when he fought against Hajjaj, which was in the year beginning 70 A.H. Mekkah at that time was surrounded by Hajjajs’ Army and they had laid siege to Mekkah for approximately one and a half years……..
When he entered into Mekkah he (Hajjaj) sent a letter to Abdullah Ibn Zubair saying you have three choices;
  1. You can be taken and chained to Abdul Malik who was then the Khalifah of Damascus.
  2. Or leave by yourself and give up all the lands that he had overcome like Egypt, Iraq, Yemen /leave the Khalifa.
  3. Or continue fighting.
So he had these three chooses from Hajjaj. He then went to his mother (Asma bint Abu Bakr radiallaahu anha) who was still alive for advice and she was over a hundred years. So Abdullah Ibn Zubair said, to his mother,
“So the people have left me by myself, even my own son, no-one is with me except a handful of people all I have is an hour of patience and then death and if I were to do what the people want me to do then I will be free.”
So then Asmaa (radiallaahu anha) replied to her son, she said,
“You know better in your own self that if you are upon the truth and you are calling towards the truth go forth for people more honourable than you were killed and have been killed and if you are not upon the truth, then what an evil son you are, you have destroyed yourself and those who are with you. If you say what you say, that if you are upon the truth and you will be killed at the hands of others then you will not truly be free, for this is not the statement of someone who is free”.
Then she said to her son, this is the statement of the mother to her son,
“how long will you live in this world, death is more beloved to me than this state you are on/ this state of weakness.”
Then this conversation between Abdullah Ibn Zubair and his mother continued.
Then he said to his mother after she had told him to go forth and fight.
He said, “I am afraid I will be mutilated by the people of Sham,I am afraid that they will cut up my body after they have killed me”
So she said to her son,”after someone has died it won’t make any difference what they do to you if you have been killed.”
Abdullah Ibn Zubair then said to his mother,”I did not come to you except to increase myself in knowledge.” The shaikh wanted to point out, look at the manners which he presented towards his mother, this was the manners of the Salaf how they would behave towards their parents.
He said to her, “I did not come to you except to increase me in knowledge, look and pay attention to this day for verily I am a dead man, your son never drank wine, nor was he fornicator, nor did he wrong any Muslim or Kaafir, nor was he unjust, I am not saying this to you to show off or show how pure I am but rather as an honour to you.”
So then  Abdullah Ibn Zubair  left by himself on his horse and he was killed by the Army of Hajjaj and when he was killed by the Army of Hajjaj all the Army said “Allah hu Akhbar” and Ibn Umer (radiallaahu anhu) heard this and he said,
” how strange is it that this man when he was born all of the Muslims said “Allah hu Akhbar” and now that he is killed everyone is also saying “Allah hu Akhbar”.
Then Hajjaj crucified him and said,” No one must put down his body except Asmaa (radiallaahu anha ), she must come to me and ask permission of me and only then will his body be put down”.
Asmaa (radiallahu anha.) refused to go and ask permission to put down her sons body and it was said to her,
“if you don’t go his body will remain like that.” So she said ” let it be then”.
Until eventually, Hajjaj came to her and said,
“what do you say about this matter ” and she said,
” Verily you have destroyed him you have ruined his life and with that you have ruined your hereafter.”
